Skifields must make snow, says MP
Opposition spokesman on overseas trade, Mr Warren Cooper said last month that New
Zealand ski fields had to work towards guaranteeing snow. He said artificial snow making, rock grooming, and more flexible planning was needed to achieve this. ' Top priority is to guarantee snow, he said. Insisting rocks and boulders cannot be removed and thus delaying the start of skiing until twenty to forty centimetres o f snow covered slope obstructions was "both nonsensical and dangerous", he said. The use of slope grooming techniques is essential, said M r Cooper. Ski fields faced massive losses as Australian ski fields advanced technologically he said. New Zealand would look like crude amateurs until trails were cleared of rough broken terrain and modern snow making techniques used.
