Rangataua rating explained

The answer to Mr Spry's letter regarding his rates was printed in the Bulletin last week The point he makes specifically regarding Rangataua is directly related back to the recent five yearly revaluation of ihe Waimarino County, including Rangataua. Revaluations are related to saies which have taken place and the increase or decrease in prices obtained in

the last five years up the revaluation are reflected in the current valuation roll. Council does not have any input into these valuations but uses them as the basis to levy the rates required. Ten to 15 years ago sections at Rangataua were valued at approximately $100 whereas the most recent sale of which I am aware was $8000. Therefore for any ratepayer selling, these increased values must be to their advantage. The uniform annual charge in the Rural Ward is an endeavour to spread the rural share of the administration costs amongst the rural ratepayers. The uniform annual charge in the Rural Ward is an endeavour to spread the rural share of the administration costs amongst the rural ratepayers. The uniform annual charge is first deducted form the total rate requirement ($787,334) and the balance approximately $727,000 is then levied by general rate. The sewerage scheme is going ahead and a contract is being finalised and work will commence in two to three months. Now that we have costings to work to, the District Manager will be correlating the overall costs and will then be able to contact ratepayers i n the defined sewerage area. These ratepayers will then be able to opt for a lump sum payment Oi service a loan over a 20 year period. The boundaries of the defined area have not been changed and remain the same as recorded in the Special Order which was required to raise the loan. Rangataua is included in the Karioi ward of

the District Council and the two Council representatives are available to all electors in that

Ward.

Waimarinio District Councillor Preserve our bank I am saddened to hear that yet another service is to be downgraded in Raetihi - the Bank of New Zealand. I am also surprised

that Central Districts Manager, Mr Neville Butler said the Raetihi premises were "over 100 years old and they need to be replaced". Where did he get his facts from? The Bank of N e w Zealand began operating in Raetihi in 1905

in a wooden dwelling on the other side of the street. It was not until 1911 that the present fine structure was ereCted on the corner of Duncan and Seddon Streets. Why does Mr Butler want to move the location to another building in the town? Surely there is nothing more suitable to banking than the present premises. With fewer staff it should accommodate furniture and fittings conveniently. It is a shame facts are often reported incorrectly to the press. Let us preserve our Bank premises and not let them became vacant and a victim of the

time.

We would be especially pleased to receive memorabillia (eg campujs notices, examination papers, sports events, early Chaff, Masskerades, graduation lists and visits by notables etc.) We would copy these and return the originals.

Current addresses for class, sports team, or hostel mates would also be valuable.
