Toughest battle won by Ohakune Karioi

Ohakune Karioi beat Wanganui High School Old Boys for the first time since 1985 last Saturdav.

The rugby game, played at home, was one of the hardest of the last round that Ohakune Karioi faced. The first half was generally an even game although most of it was

played in Ohakune Karioi territory. The local team attacked well and didn't allow High School to score any tries. However they conceded two penalties and a drop goal. Despite being a

lighter pack the Ohakune forwards put their techniques together and were able to hold High School well in the scrums. The only points for Ohakune in the first half came from a try by winger Glenn Brennan. The try came from third phase ball spun out the

back line for Glenn to score in the corner. Half time score was 94 to High School. The second half s a w Ohakune Karioi g o ahead with the team scoring a try in the first 10 minutes. When High School were pressing the ball through the back line,

Brendan Wilson intercepted and scored handy to the posts! It was not converted leaving Ohakune Karioi trailing by one point. In the last quarter Ohakune Karioi displayed some spectacular rugby. Ricki Harding, playing prop ran onto second phase ball,

broke down the High School defence and took three defenders across the line with him to score the winning try. Ricki converted his try much to the delight of the many supporters. Final score was Ohakune Karioi 14, Wanganui High School Old Boys 9. On behalf of the team, Steve Tipene, Captain of Ohakune Karioi presented a bottle of wine to Mr Vaughan Cameron who travels every weekend to give the team his support. For Ohakune Karioi all 15 were named players of the day

including the under 19s who stood in as reserves. Wanganui High School's Bruce Hurlichy, No 8 and M. Penneyfather wing, and Tala Leiasamalvao all had good games.
