White elephant party

The following report appeared in the Waimarino County Call dated Monday, June 15, 1908. "In a city (not named) where everything is up to date and the citizens are always planning some new scheme (to relieve boredom) a shocking thing happened. One of the popular society women an-

nounced a 'White Elephant Party.' Every guest was to bring along something that she could not find any use for and yet was too good to throw away. The party should have been a great success but for the unforeseen development which broke it up. Eleven of the 19 women brought their husbands."
