Tough going in Whakapapa races

Variable visibility and snow conditions made the going tough for competitors in the Haensli/Steinlager Ski Series raced at Whakapapa last weekend. With the BP Europa FIS Series only days afterwards competition was intense and with. the withdrawal o f Simon Wi Rutene due to mild snowblindness the event was wide open. In the Steinlager Cup, A Team members Mattias Hubrich (Ohakune) and Chris M o s a e d (Raetihi) came first and second respectively with Brendon Casey (Auckland) coming third. Only two women finished the very testing course. Lisa Powell (Taupo) was first and Annika H a y w o o d (Ohakune) second. In the Ski Yer Heart Out Haensli Cup, Annika Haywood and Lisa Powell again dominated the women's event with Kim Fuller (Ohakune) coming third. The men's event was won by Julian Brown (Queenstown) with Whakapapa locals Kerry Jefferies and Ben Tidswell coming second and third. Steinlager Cup results: Men 1. Mattias Hubrich, 2. Chris
