. . . and first day's slalom

The first day of the Slalom event at the BP-Europa FIS Ski Series at Turoa yesterday was set alight by the class of Felix McGrath, despite a confi-dence-shaking mist which hung on the course. The American's second run was one and a half seconds quicker than any other, catapulting him from fourth to first place and setting up a

likely win on day two today. Chief of Race John Ball said the marginal visibility had little real effect on the quality of the racing and McGrath showed his class in the day's second run. McGrath has already taken out the BP-Europa FIS Giant Slalom title and this year is rated third best in the world. Canada's Jim Read was again runner-up to McGrath in yesterday's racing, following his

second placing i n Tuesday's Giant Slalom. Robert Ormsby from the United States was third, with Norway's Finn Jagge and Ole Furuseth were poised in fourth and fifth places. The top placed Kiwi was Joe Moffett in 13th place, with Kerry Jefferies in 14th. New Zealand's top three, Simon Wi Rutene, Mattias Hubrich and Chris Mosaed all failed to complete the first run.
