Another sports event is now on the calendar for the Ruapehu region thanks to the initiative of a keen local runner, Mr Vince Pakinga. Last week he announced details for a 10-kilometre road race to be held at the end of the August school holidays, on Saturday September 10. It will follow a course through the town of Ohakune along Dreadnought Road to Rangataua and back along the main road to the town. Runners of all ages will be invited to compete and there will be trophies for m e n , women, juniors and veterans. Winstones a r e providing the main spponsorship with the Waimarino Bulletin donating a trophy for the junior winner. The veteran winner will receive a prize from a sponsor yet to be announced. Vince's interest in running has seen him compete in four Round-the-Mountains Relays, the Wanganui Iron Man triathlon, a Taupo triathlon and a Hastings marathon. He says the 10km run will be a good build-up to this year's Army organised Round-the-Mountains relay. Entries to the Winstone run will be taken on the day and all finishers will receive a certificate.
