Maori exhibition deemed best yet

Queen Elizabeth II War Memorial Museum's newest exhibition, opened last Thursday, is being proclaimed as one of the best ever. The 28 Maori Battal-

ion Exhibition traces the fortunes of the men who fought in the battalion overseas during World War Two - their hardships, triumphs and defeats. The company earned itself a special place in New Zealand's history

for its part in helping the development and advancement of New Zealand as a nation. The exhibition is the first to be conceived, designed and constructed totally within the confines of the museum, using skilled local tradesmen and staff. Highlights of the exhibition include the Victoria Cross awarded to Te Moana-Nui-A-Kiwa Ngarimu, a second lieutenant with the battalion. Ngarimu has the distinction of being the first and only Maori warrior to date who has been awarded the coveted medal. Relatives of Ngarimu were in attendance at the official opening of the exhibition o n Thursday. Maori tribes from all over the North Island converged on Waiouru for the opening. Other distinguished guests included top ranking Army officials including the Chief of General Staff, and Ministers of -Deferice and Maori Affairs. Around 500 invited guests and dignitaries assembled in the Museum's lower gallery for the official cutting of the ribbon by Sir James Henare. The exhibition honours the heroism of the men of the 28 Maori Battalion and follows the Museum Trust Boards policy of highlight the major military campaigns and leaders in New Zealand's history.
