Karioi to export via Wanganui
Karioi wood pulp could be exported from Wanganui's Port Castlecliff within the next twelve months. Winstone Pulp Industries is one of five partners of a company that will soon take over the running of the port. Directing Manager of the mill, Klas Kronqvist said last week it would be at least six months before the port could handle ships of the size that carry pulp but hopefully pulp would leave Wanganui within 12 months. The timing of the port development and shipping charter arrangements will dictate when pulp will first leave Wanganui said Mr Kronqvist. He said once the port had been dredged ships of up to a seven metre draught and 6 0 0 0 tonnes would carry pulp to the mill's overseas markets. He said as much of the mill's pulp as possible would leave via Wanganui. Some would continue to be shipped through other ports because of chartering arrangements. New Zealand Railways would transport all of
the pulp bound for Wanganui for export said Mr Kronqvist. The port company will take over Port Castlecliff after August 9, when the port lease will be formally signed. The consortium i s waiting for accurate figures on income it will receive from endowment lands now under the control of the Wanganui City Council. The income from the endowment lands is to go towards maintenance of port navigation equipment and the moles at the river mouth.
