Penalties dominate rugby scoreboard
Ohakune Karioi rugby seniors went into last Saturday's game without a coach and without their Captain Steve Tipene. Coach Ken George resigned last week and Steve Tipene was injured at Taupo the week before playing for the
Northern Wanganui Representative team. Despite these setbacks Ohakune Karioi went onto the field fired up. They gave Marist an unexpected battle for the 80 minutes, though lost 1816. The Waimarino for-
wards played a remarkable game considering they were yet again up against a far heavier pack. They gained a lot of ball from line out rucks and mauls and fed the back well. The backs in turn delighted the spectators with a good display,
running the ball and often putting pressure on the opposition. Unfortunately they only managed two tries. It was one of the best, if not the best games of rugby the senior team have played this season, according to a regular follower. The team gave away
too many penalties, including a penalty try right under the posts which Marist converted. According to the same rugby follower the referee missed many knock-ons and off-side play. The spirited Ohakune Karioi team Marist were only able to score one other try. Sadly Ohakune Karioi lost Marty Swainson from prop in the first 10 minutes with a badly bruised shoulder and Lachlan Harding left before half time with a chipped elbow. He is expected to be out for the season. The Ohakune Karioi under 19s provided great support and encouragement on the day, which was much appreciated by the seniors. All 15 players plus the two replacements stood out and Steve Cameron was named player of the day. Marist' s Gavin Stratton at half back and Tusi Su'a on the wing played very well for Marist. Marists points came from a try by Solomon Su'a, a penalty try, two conversions and two penalty goals from Tasi Su'a. Ohakune's points came from tries by Glen Brennan and Brendan Wilson, a conversion and penalty goal from Kellich Harding and a penalty goal from Lachlan Harding. Raetihi vs Ratana Ratana beat Raetihi at home on Saturday 18-10. Ratana's points came from a try by Mat Kereti and Dennis Ngatuere's conversion, dropped goal and three penalty goals. Raetihi's points came from a try by Thomas Waara and penalty goals from Gerard Hipango and Steve Gordon. Waiouru vs Kaierau. Kaierau beat Waiouru 25-3 on Saturday. Points for Kaierau came from Tries b y Mike Udy and Richard Given. Craig Symons kicked one conversion and five penalty goals. Waiouru's Pita Lloyd kicked a penalty goal for Waiouru.
