Regional speech contest at Ruapehu College

Regional finals of the National Speech Contest for secondary schools are to be held at Ruapehu College tomorrow July 20. All those who are interested are invited attend to listen to the speakers, who will compete in the school hall, the gymnasium

and in the s e n i o r common room. , The contest is divided into four sections. Te Rawhiti Ihaka, Junior All Maori will be held in the school hall followed by Pei te Hurinui, Senior All Maori. The Sir Turi Carroll Junior English contest will be held in the senior common

room and the Kori- , mako, Senior English section will be in the Gymnasium. The day's programme will start with a welcome at 8.30am. After a cup of tea the speeches begin, with the day finishing in the hall with presentations of certificates and trophies.

Topics for the speakers include: "There is one eye of the needle through which must pass the red cotton, the white cotton, the black cotton." Po tatau T e Wherowhero, 1858, for the Korimako section; "... was/is a person who is a good model

for our present time, for the junior English section. The All Maori sections have open topics. Finalists of the Interwhanau Speech contests held at Ruapehu College recently will compete in the regional finals. They are Awhina Edwards (Huia), Mathew Fetzer (Weka), Lisa Waara (Huia), competing in the Junior English section. Mark Akurangi (Tui), Sylvia Pue (Weka), Matiu Haitana (Weka), Senior English.

Mario Mareikura (Tui), Nicola Cast (Huia), Junior Maori. Maxine George (Tui), Mark Cribb (Kiwi), Senior Maori. Whanua points at the end of the Ruapehu

competition were: Tui, 16-English, 9-Maori, total 25; Huia 12-En-glish, 6-Maori, total 18; Kiwi, 6-English, 2Maori, total 8; Weka, 2-English, 5-Maori, total 7.
