Prediction for dozens of 'bridges to nowhere'
The principal of spending money on rural roads based on traf-
fic counts and not on value added to the district is a dangerous one and should be fought.
This was the view expressed by Councillor Dave Griffiths at the last Works and Reserves committee meeting. Cr Griffiths was referring to a new policy of the National Roads Board whereby roading facilities have to be economically justified, based on the ratio of cost of work to average annual daily * traffic. District Mayor Garrick Workman said the policy could see a dozen or more 'bridge to nowhere' situations. Cr Compton said the policy was a fait accompli, that it was too late to fight it. District Manager John Murrihy said he thought the council needed to decided if it wanted to put ratepayer's money into roads that are in effect internal access roads.
