Children's library gets facelift and new books

Waiouru Children's Library has recently been re-vamped ancji can now offer young readers even more variety and interest. The changes to the library's internal layout was instigated by the team oi volunteer librarians and undertaken by personnel from the School of Electrical and Mechanical Engineering. Shelving previously often unaccessible to small children has been lowered and arranged to let m more light through the library's windows, which will soon be sporting bright curtains. A large number of books - around 2000 were selected from the library's collection as being too old, shabby or outdated and are now available for sale at 50c each. A large number of brand new picture and story books are on order to replace those removed. These include an easy reader series and a variety of books chosen for teenage readers. The library also sports an adults section including books on exercise, child care and health which will be

added to in the future. A large selection of tapes and read-along books plus numerous puzzles can also be withdrawn by parents for use by children. Volunteer librarian Robyn Wilson is keen to build up a comprehensive range of bilingual books for the library's Maori Language Nest. The few books already available for loan are well-read. Funding for new books comes partly from donations from the Thrift Shop, Waiouru Plunket and the Army, who also meet the cost of maintenance, heating and power. The children's library is open between 3 -4pm weekdays. lt also opens one morning a week during the winter and three momings during the summer. The library relies solely on mother help to stay open and all work is done voluntarily. The small subs payed - $5 per year or $10 for three years, goes towards purchase of stationery and materials needed for the administration of the library.
