Mountain catering disappoints skiers

Sub standard catering at Turoa Skifields greeted opening weekend skiers. Spotless caterers have blamed Turoa for the problems and Turoa have put it down to teething problems for a new company in an unfamiliar environment.

Problems encountered by some customers the Bulletin spoke to included no water for drinks at the Giant, cold, sub-standard food and the cafeterias running out of food early and closing early. Catering manager Bev Turn page 14

From page 1 Riley said the problems at the Giant Cafe were caused by Turoa. She said her staff at the cafe ran out of water and they had no power. "My staff copped all the flack," she said. "there was nothing we could do about it. The

power was off and on." She said the trouble was caused by generator failure which was fixed by Sunday. The Snowflake cafe also had power problems said Ms Riley. She said her staff had not been able to get into the Giant Cafe until Tuesday to prepare because building work had not been c o m - pleted. Mountain Manager Robin Foubister said there were problems with the water over the weekend but that the Giant Cafe had not run out of water. He said there had been major problems with the generator last Tuesday but Turoa's maintenance contractor was working in the area and fixed the generator

the same day. He said Turoa had approached Spotless Catering management to express their concem at the poor standard of catering on the mountain and that the "one or two problems" would be sorted out. Bev Riley said the cafeterias had to close early to allow time to clean up. The Giant Cafe would have to close at 3.15pm because her staff had to be ready to leave the top of the Giant at 4pm. All catering staff had to leave the ski field at 5pm, she said, because the last Turoa bus leaves at 5pm. Turoa has contracted to transport Spotless Catering staff to and from the ski field, she said.
