CAN I HAVE A GLASS OF WATER?
Over twelve months ago the Ohakune Borough councillors patted themselves on the back for finally deciding on a water treatment system for the town. The way things are going it seems we might be waiting the twelve years or so it took them to get to that point before we actually see anything happen near a water pipe. Yes, it does seem reasonable to negotiate with our vegetable growers to see if we can't delay the building of the $500,000 Stage Two. But why has it taken so long for someone to think of it? It seems at every other council meeting there is a new reason for delay. Many locals say the water's fine, it just looks terrible. This does seem to be true for some Ohakune residents who aren't adversely affected by the "below World Health Organisation standards" water. However, many residents wouldn't dream of drinking unboiled tap water and there are visitors who go away from here with a queasy stomach and a conviction to never come back. Ohakune is a tourist town and if we want carrot growers here as well as tourists we can't go on serving up beautiful tasting but foul water. When do we get to see some action?
