Garden praise and doubt
I hear through the 'grapevine' that Grant Drabble is leaving the District Council staff. I would like to take this opportunity t o thank Grant for all the hard work he has done for the Ohakune Borough Council and the people of Ohakune. Grant has planted numerous trees and shrubs in the Borough, some
of which he has propagated himself and are horticulturally quite special. I just hope that his dedication to the job is not going to be i n vain. And that the standard of landscaping in Ohakune is not go-
ing to slip. I realise that Works Overseer Craig Ryland has the best of intentions, but does he have the horticultural expertise to maintain the high standard? Judging by the new plantings at Raetihi I think not. The Garden 'Gnome' I have become increasingly peeved over the past few months with the unsociable habit dog owners have
in the control of their animals in the shopping centre. We have had people tethering their dogs to the post outside our front doors so they are able to "pee" over the supermarket trolleys and "poo" in a close enough place to the door to enable everyone to stand in it. And that's along with scaring the hell out of kids and older people who try to pet these dogs. Along with these people we have those who just let them run loose, with n o
registration. I would like to ask through your paper the following questions: 1. Do we have a dog ranger? Who is h e ? What are his powers? 2. I believe that Ohakune has a bylaw, passed in 1973, re the control of dogs. Could you find the wording of this bylaw? 3. What other law will we be able to use to prosecute these irresponsible people. I look forward to your answers in next week's Bulletin.
