Two rugby wins, one loss
Ohakune Karioi played an entertaining game in good spirits again st Marist on Saturday, in bitterly cold conditions at Spriggins Park. The score of 19-8 was made up of three tries for Marist and two for Ohakune Karioi. Tasi Su'a playing wing and G Mathews playing halfback were the pick of the Marist pack, Tasi Su'a's kicking winning the game for Marist. For Ohakune Karioi the front row of Alan Kirk, Bruce Mahar and Marty Swainson did their best against a heavier Marist pack. Ohakune clearly missed the experience of Ricky Harding in the scrum. Bruce Cranston played his usual good game at lock and Gavin Harrison did his best. Kallich Harding played yet another outstanding game and must surely be a contender for the W a n g a n u i representative side. The Mathews brothers, Richard as flanker and Henry on the wing covered a lot of ground and attacked well, as did Lachlan Harding who also has talent playing in the back line. Steve Tipene was good on attack, Whetu Mareikura had his moments and Kerry Wilson, Charles Mareikura and Steve Cameron all ran well as did Glen Brennan who went on for Kerry when he was injured. It would be good to see reserve Chris Stewart get a run.
Ohakune Karioi has the potential to win the final of the round if they can put it together as a team. They have the experience, talent and are almost at their peak form. Once again the supporters for Ohakune Karioi are conspicuous by the lack of numbers. Their team could be helped with more sideline support. Points for Marist came from tries by Tasi Su'a, G Mathews and L Summerfield plus two conversion and a penalty by T Su'a. For Ohakune Karioi Steve Cameron and Richard Mathews scored a try each. Ohakune Karioi play Utiku OB at Ohakune on July 9, Marist at Ohakune on July 1 6 , Wanganui Pirates at Wanganui on July 23, Hunterville at Ohakune on July 30, Wanganui HS at Ohakune on August 6, Huia at Taihape on August 13 and Marton OB at Marton on August 20. Waiouru vs Marist C Waiouru move up from division three after beating Marist C 31-0 on Saturday. Tries were scored by Rick Tawhiri, Ken Ehd, Adrian Christie, John Fortes.
