College speech contest
Ruapehu College is holding the regional finals of the Speech Contest this year on Wednesday, July 2 0 from 8am to 3.45pm. Around 35 colleges are expected to enter the competition which has been running for 23 years and has been
newly named "Nga Whakataetae Mo Nga Manu Karero O Nga Kura Tuarua". This is the first time the competition has been held in the Waimarino District. Mrs Merrilyn George, the co-ordinator, says she would be grateful for any assistance from the community to help cater for what is expected to be 400-500 visitors. Any donations of meat and vegetables will be kindly accepted. She can be contacted at the college, phone 58398. The Waimarino District Council has donated $100 and any other financial support will be gratefully accepted. The competition will be run in four categories: the Korimako which is the senior English speech, the Sir Tui Carrol, the junior English speech; the Pei Te Hurinui Jones, senior Maori speech; and the Rawhiti Ihaka, junior Maori speech. all sections are open to Maori and Pakeha students. Prizes to be awarded range from book tokens to trophies and the winner of each section will be entered into the National final. The regional competition represents the Manawatu, Horowhenua, Whanganui and Taranaki districts. The National finals will be held at Forum North,
Whangarei from September 21-23.
