Trophy display for shooters
The Waimarino Branch of the N.Z. Deerstalkers Association have a busy weekend coming up. On July 23 and 2 4 they have planned a trophy display to be held in the Cosmopolitan Club rooms in Raetihi. The success of the display will depend on how many trophies and items of hunting interest are presented by hunters from the Waimarino and Central North Island. Malcolm Gillece, President of the Waimarino Branch, is appealing to anyone with good quality trophies, be they deer, chamois, thar, goat or pig, to help make the weekend a success by allowing the deerstalkers to include such trophies in the display. Other items of interest include deformed deer heads, slides, photos and mounted animals.
Any person who can be of assistance should contact Des McFadyen phone 54-387, Trevor Fredericksen phone 54052 and Malcol m Gillece phone 56-469 Waiouru. A slide presentation is planned for the Saturday evening with some excellent slides of the South Island included. One of the main reasons for the weekend is to attract new members. The N.Z. Deerstalkers Association provides more than just an interest in hunting for its members. Other activities include social activities, slide evenings in conjunction with meetings, research relating to wildlife and game management, org anised trips and participation in national competitions. The association provides a quarterly maga-
zine, New Zealand Wildlife, to all members. Included in the ranks of the association are a group o f sports shooters who participate in both national and international shoots. Most local branches are actively involved in range shooting as well. Firearms safety is one of the main aims of the association and training for budding enthusiasts is foremost in the association's policies. Trophy display
annual challenge for the Waiouru Shield held "on Saturday June 18 at the Waimarino range. The shoot attracted a good turnout of members from all three participating branches. Winners this year were Taihape branch who had the benefit of calmer conditions to start with, but all credit must go to their consistent shooting. Taupo were placed second with t h e Waimarino branch shooting in gale force winds and driving rain, a close third. Only a few points separated all three branches on aggregate. Top shooters of the
day were: Derek Gardner on the 100 metre with a very creditable 83 points; runner-up was Tracy Peters with 81; top shooter on the running boar was Taupo's Steve Deihl with 8 2 with Waimarino shooter Trevor Fredericksen runner-up with 77 points. Taupo shooters were subjected to shooting conditions that they were not used to and performed very well under the circumstances. Next year's challenge will b e hosted by the Taihape branch.
