Road policy flack
The Local Government Association will discuss the National Roads Board policy of cutting subsidies on rural roading and bridges with the board, the Waimarino District Council heard last week. Councillor Compton asked if there was any discussion on the policy at the recent LGA conference which District Manager John Murrihy, Town Clerk Edith Moore and Councillor Ellen Gould attended. Mr Murrihy said he heard no discussion on the matter apart from the resolution to take the matter up with the NRB. "They saw it as a possible beginning of cutting back," said Mr Murrihy. "This was an item highlighted on our investigation tour that there were some properties for example where council had roads which really could be said to be internal access. Apparently there are a number around here that could b e looked at." "We really need to keep a finger on the pulse, on the basis there could well be some flack in this district," said Cr Compton. Cr Compton called for the council to support the LGA "if this District Council can in any way push some weight behind the nationally organised bod-
ies to protest the move of the NRB." Cr Compton said many ratepayers were
objecting to the possible cutting of maintenance levels on rural roads
