Ohakune loses respected man
Long-standing Ohakune resident Eddie Buck, died Monday June 6, aged 76.
He was born Edmund Frank Buck i n Wellington, one of a family of six children. Eddie Buck received his education a t Palmerston North Primary School until he turned 11, then on to Palmerston North Boy's High School. He later attended Wellington Tech, renamed Wellington High School. He met and married his first love, N o r a Clancy, at St John's Church in Ohakune. The couple settled in
Ohakune in 1940. In 1944 Eddie and Nora took over the running of Clancy's Store, formerly run by Nora's brother. They returned to Wellington for seven years where Eddie worked in the head office of BP in the marketing division. Their son Nigel was born in 1951. In 1954 they returned to Ohakune - this time to stay. They purchased Clyde Thomas' Drapery in Clyde St, renamed it
Buck's Drapery, and thus began a 33 year career in shop management for Eddie. His longest break away from the shop was four months, when he and Nora travelled overseas.
A quiet, good humoured man, his interests lay with the Masonic Lodge and the Waimarino Brass Band of which he was a long-serving patron. While their son was school-age, Mr Buck served on the PTA of
Ohakune Primary School and Ruapehu College. He was also a regular church goer and worked in the vestry of St John's A n g 1 i c a n Church. Eddie Buck enjoyed good health throughout his long and fruitful life. The respect he commanded was made obvious by the great number of people who turned out to pay their last respects to a wellliked man.
