Sign discussion stretched out
Whether to allow the Waimarino Golf Club to erect a permanent sign advising motorists of the location of the course was a subject of a long drawn out discussion at a recent District Council town planning meeting.
The council earlier approved the erection of a sign subject to six conditions, one of which was that the sign be removed if a kiosk was erected in the area. The club wrote to council asking that this last condition be removed, saying that to go to the expense o f putting up the sign and
then remove it at an indefinite date afterwards, was unsatisfactory. The letter also pointed out that the sign was to be purely directional and a kiosk would not cover this function. The councillors a t the meeting discussed at length the dropping of the final condition
and their worries that the sign would carry commercial advertising. Cr Griffiths said there was a danger of setting a precedent if the sign was allowed. He said the old county council had come up against the problem of approval for signs many times. Committee
chairman B r u c e Thompson said each case was judged on its individual merit. The amendment was approved taking into account the fact that the golf club was not a commercial enterprise, and with the addition that the sign be subject to council's approval.
