River road upgrade help sought

Whether to leave the Pipiriki Road improvements on the list for National Roads Board consideration was discussed at the full District Council meeting May 30. Earlier, councillors had decided to apply for funding assitance for the project. After a short discussion the decision was unaltered, but Mayor Workman added: "I certainly believe if the United Council meets again we should mount a case for the Minister of Tourism and the Minister of Maori Affairs," said Mayor Workman. He said because the Pipiriki Road would primarily be used as a tourist route it was a special purpose road. "It's got to be a combined effort," he said.
