Lesser bus stop 'evil' picked
No alternative site could be found for the Ohakune Road Services bus stop that suited the corporation, and council have decided to approve the Clyde Street site.
The subject was debated at the Waimarino District full council meeting May 30. A subcommittee o f councillors had m e t with Railways officials to discuss the problem and alternative sites, butnone w'ere accepted by the officials. Railways' agency was at Hammond's book shop in Goldfinch Street but has been relinquished and a new agency set up in the old Bulletin office in Clyde Street. Railways want a bus stop outside their new agency office. The council was con:erned that the Clyde Street site would b e dangerous, with up to ihree buses stopping in Ohakune at certain limes. Councillor Sue was ihe most vocal in opposition to the Clyde Street site. He sugested the Goldfinch itreet site should renain. "I believe the Goldfinch Street site is he lesser of two evils," said Cr Sue. "Many people believe a bus stop in Clyde Street would be dangerous."
Councillor Gould said the bus stop and the office needed to go together, and Cr Frew said
the buses only stopped in town for short periods each day. Cr Gould moved that the council support the bus stop's move to Clyde Street but that a 15 minute stopping re-
striction be imposed. "I am quite astounded that this council can accept this situation. In the past we have spent thousands on traffic engineering reports, only to ignore their find-
ings," said Cr Sue. The motion was carried and Mayor Workman asked Cr Sue if he wanted his vote against it recorded. To which he answered emphatically: "Yes, I do."
