NP pupils plant national trees
Two pupils from National Park Primary School travelled to Wellington this week with a gift for the nation.
Kathleen Raharuhi and Aaron Billington, both 12, who live on the doors tep of the Country's oldest National Park, Tongariro, presented conservation minister Helen Clark with three native shrubs for planting in parliament grounds. The shrubs w e r e
propagated at the department's Taupo nursery from stock collected in the Wellington region. The children and the minister planted the shrubs on Friday morning, providing a focns for Arbor Day celebrations throughout New Zealand.
Arbor Day activities are being co-ordinated in Wellington, where, the Department of Conservation and the National Park Centennial Commission, with the help of Speedlink (a division of N e w Zealand Railways) and Printpac, are arranging the delivery of two native trees to every school in New Zealand. The commission devoted six months of
the National Park centennial year to celebrations of the past one hundred years of parks and protected areas. The highlight of that phase was the celebration at Tongariro on September 23 last year. After that, the emphasis was changed to promoting awareness of the future of parks and other conservation lands, with the main
focus being on the native trees to be planted for the future on Arbor Day. Kathleen and Aaron both took part in a National Park Primary School performance of the story of Rangi and Papa at the September 23 celebrations. Both are "absolutely delighted" to have been selected for the Arbor Day event. The children are both enthusiastic about the outdoors and nature and are capable skiers. They identify strongly with their National Park. Both children come from farms in the Na-, tional Park area, and both their mothers work at the Chateau Tongariro. They will arrive in Wellington on Thursday evening. The shrubs will be planted at a site for uncommon native species in Parliament grounds.
