Junction licence expires

The Waimarino District Council are concerned that a planning appeal against K&M Developments' approval for the Junction Railway Hotel may be a waste of ratepayer's money. New Zealand Railways advised the council last month that the development licence for K&M had expired and, as far as they were concerned, they had "no further standing in the matter". District Manager John Murrihy said if the planning appeal went ahead it would cost ratepayers "quite a bit". He said if K&M had lost interest in the scheme the appeal would be for nothing.

The licence issued in September 1987 was to last six months while K&M "pursued all the necessary planning options prior to confirming or declining a definite development proposal." Railways Project Manager R.J. Elton said in the letter to the council that as far as he was concerned K&M had "no further standing in the matter". Roy Middleton, spokesperson for K&M Developments, said last week the company was still very much interested in the Junction Development. "We've still been trying to put the financial backing together and are trying to renegotiate the licence with Railways," said Mr Middleton. "We consider it still a goer," he said.
