New lodge aims for value
Skiers Pete and Sue Howard were outraged by the cost of accommodation at most ski resorts so Pete decided to build his own lodge.
Howard's Lodge' in National Park is the culmination of months of designing and building by Mr Howard. The lodge w h ic h sleeps 46, took 16 weeks to build. Mr Howard said he built the lodge because he was sick of being overcharged at other resorts. At $25 for bed and breakfast the Howards are aiming to
offer clicntele value for money. To the couple, National Park seemed an ideal location for a lodge. "It's a much quieter life in National Park than in Ohakune," said Sue. "The people are very friendly and we've got a great view of the mountain from our site." The lodge takes u p almost all of the quarter acre commercial sec-
tion. Mr Howard is optimistie about building a small retail outlet on the front of the lodge next season if there is the demand. The focal point of the lodge is the spacious communal dining area and lounge. Accommodation upstairs and downstairs is identical, with either two, three or four bed bunk rooms. All rooms are equipped with in-built radiator heaters. Another essential was the installation of a drying room on the ground floor.
The Howards estimate cost of building to be around $200,000. Pete Howard has been in the building industry for 30 years. He also operates as a building contractor. The couple owned and operated a small service station at Turangiita near Taupo for two years prior to moving to National Park. Mr Howard
