TASCI reflects on successful year

Turoa Alpine Ski Club holds its AGM this Saturday and reviews the past year which has seen top achievements from TASCI racers and the continued success of the Japanese exchange programme. Club racers Matius Hubrich represented New Zealand in the Calgary Glympics, Chris Mosaed was in the New Zealand A Team and Patrick Cooper showed an amazing performance at the Disabled Olympics at Innsbruck in Austria. Patrick Cooper was placed eighth in the downhill, 4th in the Giant Slalom and won the silver in the slalom. He went on to compete in the Canadian Disabled Championships where he won gold in the downhill, giant slalom and slalom and had the

fastest time of all classes in the slalom. Patrick is to speak to the annual general meeting on Saturday, where he will tell the club of his aim to make the New Zealand able bodied Ski Team in the next few years. Other Club globetrotters were Warren Scott who spent the northern winter in Shiga Kogen as a ski instructor; Sheree and Tina Drayton also worked at Shiga Kogen and Annika and Todd Haywood who skied and trained in Canada with their family. George Drayton took the third junior ski team exchange to Shiga Kogen in January, Canadian ski coach Guy Pulson was flown to Japan to instruct, assisted by Toshi and Kazy. A highlight from the Shiga Kogen junior team's visit last August

was the very generous gifts of transceiver radios which were presented to the club from the Shiga Kogen Ski Club and from Hirosawa San. NZ Ski Fields have indicated that they will be unable to lease the TASCI clubrooms this year. This loss of revenue will have major

implications on the club's subsidising of activities and coaching. Other groups associated TASCI members will be encouraged to rent the clubrooms on a shortterm basis. The TASCI ski race programme this year will be the organising and the running of the Rossignol, Homestyle

and the two McDonald races with the possibility of a Super G which is subject to the confirmation of a sponsor. TASCI will receive a fee of $750 per race, so members who do not wish to pay the club work party levy, will be encouraged to help in the running of these races.

The 1988 FIS programme has confirmed an event for Turoa on August 10-13. This race is to be organised by John Ball and run by Turoa Skifields with assistance from local ski clubs. Many TASCI members will be committed at that time with the Shiga Kogen exchange and the race

programme but the club hopes to help where it can. President of TASCI Bruce Wilde reports that he has invited the president of the Shiga Kogen Ski Club to set up a pilot exchange scheme of parents. The exchange would be run along similar lines to the junior race team.
