POSSUM TRAPPERS VITAL FOR SAVING KIWIS
The Department of Conservation urges possum trappers finding injured kiwis to bring them into their nearest office, in a bid to preserve numbers. Wanganui District Conservator John Ombler said the aim of the department is to encourage good public relations with trappers who are often instrumental in saving the birds' lives by prompt action. A large number of Kiwi delivered to the Department of Conservation's office in Ameku Road, Raetihi were saved because of the quick action of trappers. Trappers who deliver injured birds to the office are assured anonymity of name and location of their traps. This, said Mr Ombler, has been and will continue to be the policy of the Department. In fact, those delivering injured birds are welcomed with open arms. Mr Ombler said bringing in Kiwi is a means of the public actively contributing to furthering conservation in their area. The birds are nursed back to health and then re-released in their natural habitat.
