Pilot spots wreck

The Bulletin salutes Waimarino pilot Jim Reed for his part in a recent search and rescue mission in the area. Jim Reed was the first to spot the wreckage of the light plane with

nine people aboard that crashed north of Wanganui last week. He and Raetihi Constable John Robinson took to the air in the Waimarino Rescue helicopter at first light and took 1 1/2 hours to spot the wreckage. It was at their fourth pass over the rugged hill country of the Ahu Ahu Valley that they spotted it. Jim: "I felt sick. I was just speechless - it was

quite a shock to see the extent of the damage. "It was fairly obvious that there was little chance of survivors." The early finding of the missing light aircraft was due to good luck Mr Reed said. It was the fourth search that Mr Reed has been involved in the past 18 months. The rescue helicopter was used in seven rescue operations for the same period.
