The Ruapehu Lions Club is turning scrap metal into money. Since December, members have raised about $4500 for their projects by collecting scrap. President Geoff Lovegrove says about 18 railway wagon-loads have been collected so far. Most of the money will be used to sponsor people. The club has an annual commitment to sponsor a student at St Dominic's School for the Deaf in Feilding. The sponsorship costs $2000 ayear. In addition, the Lions annually consider applications from Ruapehu College students for sponsorship on the sailing ship "Spirit of New Zealand." "This y ear we 're helping two students with half their expenses," says Mr Lovegrove. If anyone has any spare metal lying around, call Pat goldfinch on 58368 and he will make sure the Lions put it to good use.
