What is real peace?
We hear much of the peace movement and the aCtivities of its members in their efforts to bring before all nations their aim of peace in the world. While we may not fully agree with their methods, we commend them for their ideals, often putting themselves in danger in their efforts to attain them. Every day we read in the newspapers about violence and cruelty in some form or another, - the result of man's inhumanity to man and while that attitude persists peace is a myth. The dictionary defines peace as "cairn, repose, absence of hostility, freedom from wars, quietness of mind, harmony." The kind of peace most needed and above all cost is the inner peace that comes from God. The message of the angels announcing the birth of our Lord, - "Peace on earth, goodwill to men," is not attainable in any way but by turning to God, and accepting his son as our Saviour, - not collectively but individually. It is a very personal decision and until it is
made we will never experience the real peace that Jesus speaks of in John 14: 27, "My peace I give unto you." An unbeliever may think he has peace, but is confusing it with contentment with his lot. Riches and possessions may give a sense of security- and satisfaction, as a good meal will satisfy a hungry person, but when trouble comes "peace" goes and worry takes over. It is not until one experiences that Godgiven inner peace that one can appreciate its depth of sincerity and fulfilment. Romans 5: 1 tells us "Now we have been put right
with God through faith we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ." (GNB). Having made peace with God through the acceptance of the Lord's sacrifice for sins on our behalf, we have the peace of God, which Phillipians 4:7 says is beyond all human understanding, and will keep your hearts and minds in union with Jesus Christ." (GNB). This is the most important peace movement of all and only by Facing Up individually will we know and experience peace in its full "dictionary definition."
