First Rotary Report
This week's Waimarino Rotary report from secretary Bill Peach is the first of a reguIar column to appear in the Bulletin. At the Rotary meeting on April 27, Rotarians had an address from Tony Wright, manager of Turoa Skifields. Mr Wright bought members up to date with the various tourism bodies on which he serves. The committees look at tourism in general, the possibility of holding a winter Olympics in New Zealand and general FIS races. Mr Wright outlined that before New Zealand could hope to run a winter Olympics, many years would need to pass so that both officials and competitiors became proficient in the running
of the various events ran at winter Olympics. He said this could take from 15-30 years to accomplish but unless one started with this premise, we could not hope to run a winter games. In thanking the guest speaker, Hira Parata stated that members had a better appreciation of the immense job that holding and hosting such an event as the winter Olympics involved. Gavin Jones reported that the club had cut approximately six cords of firewood which will raise funds for local projects. President Colin Turner stated that the club was looking for projects in both Raetihi and Ohakune that were worthy of support as the club has funds in hand.
