Glee Club
Because of its isolation and distance from the main centres of population, the Ruapehu region has always prided itself on the tradition of being able to provide its own entertainment and recreation. If proof were needed these early photographs record two such activities as far back as the Great War in 1914-18. One picture features the Waimarino "Glee Club" in wartime while the other shows members of a ladies cross-cut sawing team at a competition. The tradition of providing (or at least organising) one's own entertainment
and recreation in the region continues to this day and reflects the entrepreneurial skills of local residents. The variety of sporting events (rugby, netball, indoor and outdoor soccer, hockey, golf etc), the gymnastic demonstrations and competitions, the skifield activities and other mountain-related events, the street-day parades and appeals, the local fashion parades, exhibitions of arts and crafts, night time entertainment provided by hotels, clubs and nightclubs all testify to a lively and independent community.
