WHAKAPAPA GLACIER DIES - 1988

The 1987/88 summer marks the demise of Mt Ruapehu's Whakapapa Glacier, according to DSIR officials. An extremely dry, warm summer has had its toll on the glacier, which in the last 40 years has abated one mile to become virtually nothing. Rainfall for April amounted to 125mm. No rainfall has been recorded since April 9. Also noticable in its absence is snow. The slopes of Whakapapa are totally bare which is highly unusual for the time of year according to Tongariro National Park staff.
