Unexpected expedition
By Jocelyn Price A white-water rafting expedition with 16 Nepalese soldiers was not what I'd expected when I first came to Ohakune. For a young journalist who'd spent 18 years on a farm before moving to the "Big Smoke" of Auckland, rafting was something sure to be loved and an opportunity not to be missed. The prospect of freezing water and white foam was very appealing because it reminded me of the things I'd done at home, and was a chance to get out of a smoke-filled office.
Ohakune is much like home, a lot more so than Auckland.
Home is a farm 20 minutes north of Whangarei. It's not the backward community those in Auckland and further south seem to think, but a friendly place with heaps to do - if you know where to look. The "Great Outdoors" is my favourite pastime. The Waimarino district provides the outdoor activities I love - camping, rock climbing, white-water rafting etc. The Tongariro River expedition was great fun, and the soldiers - a courageous bundle of laughs - not what I'd expected at all.
