No need to travel for new licences

Waimarino drivers do not have to travel out of the area to register for their lifetime driver's licence. The Waimarino District Council offices have been set up as a collection point for issuing the new licences. Everyone holding a current Driver's Licence is required to register for a Lifetime Driver's Licence. The new Government legislation came into being on March 31 1988. The Lifetime Driver's Licences eliminate the need to renew licences and pay a fee for every renewal. To ensure that there is not a rush of people wanting to exchange their licences, the Ministry of Transport is recommending that people apply within

one week of their birthdays, so as not to forget. Those who forget to renew it within a month of their birthday may be required to resit their licence. People with birthdays early in April are urged to visit the District Council office soon. Bring your old Driver's Licence and fee. The fee is a once only payment and is calculated on the expiry date of the holders' present licence. If the holder has valid coupons on their licence they receive a refund. If the licence expired between the years 1981-85, the holder will have an extra fee to pay. The application form and current licence are checked immediately by computer. If all details

prove correct, the applicant's lifetime licence is posted to them the following day. The new licence must be signed by the holder immediately. The new licences are made from extremely tough material, made that way to be longlasting and virtually impossible to rip. Unlike the former licences, they are a single sheet which can be folded in four to fit easily into a credit card holder. Printed on the licence is the holders, name, address, eye colour and birth date.
