Bus stop site study
A full investigation by Waimarino District Council members and New Zealand Road Services officials will precede the resiting of the bus stop to Clyde St, Ohakune.
A letter from Works Engineer Don Sattler tabled at the Works and Reserves committee meeting recommended that a full investigation be carried out before the new site is approved by the council. Mr Sattler said that New Zealand Railways had approached the District Council on March 17 for a depot to be established outside their office, the former Waimarino Bulletin office, in Clyde St. Mr Sattler reported that the manager of AA in Taihape who is responsible for office adjoining the new Speedlink depot, had no objections to the siting of a bus stop outside the building. Councillor Peggy Frew spoke in favour of a bus stop in Clyde St, which she said would alleviate the "bottle-neck" caused by buses parking outside the bookshop in Goldfinch St.
Other councillors spoke against the site. | Cr Errol Sue voicedi concern about the intersection of Clyde andj Goldfinch Streets. "It is a very, very dangerous area for pedestrians," he said. "No thought has been put into the siting of the depot." Cr Bruce Thompson volunteered his time to conduct an independant survey of other options for the bus stop. One suggested site was in Ayr Street. "I believe there are other good sites available in town. I would like to invite an inspector to town to discuss the matter," he said. The District Council moved that a meeting of councillors, the works engineer, district manager and New Zealand Road Services be held before any further discussion on the matter.
