Tough job for Turoa

B y Teresa O'Connor New Zealand faces a stiff task to meet the demands set by the International Ski Federation (FIS) before Turoa is suitable as a possible venue for some events in the 1989/1990 World Cup. Turoa Ski School Director John Ball,

says the commitment required could be above the resources that Turoa Skifield has available. Insurance sponsors need to be found, adequate funding arranged and international television coverage set up. He expects to know by the end of the week if a sponsor has been found.

Of prime importance to Turoa's possible selection for World Cup events will be the success of the FIS races here from August 10 to 13. Mr Ball has just returned from Europe and the United States, where he went to observe international ski teams and try to attract them to compete in the Turoa FIS races.

Two slaloms and two giant slaloms are planned. A representative from FIS will be sent to observe races and judge the quality of the organising and the suitability of the venue. "With tourism as an important part of the economy, the World Cup events would benefit both the ski industry and the

country as a whole," Mr Ball says. Mr Ball says Turoa still has plenty to offer skiers in the coming season. The Adult Academy, a scheme involving intense ski instruction over a five-day period, will be continued because of its popularity in the past. Intropak - a discounted package aimed at potential first-time skiers - will be run for the third season.

The deal includes a bus ride up to the field, ski equipmect, lift passes and ski instruction, all at a discounted rate. Turoa Ski Academy will be offering a wide range of packages to skiers, but Mr Ball points out that all plans depend on one factor. "We're in the hands of God as far as the weather is concerned," he said. "I'm praying for snow."
