More want COGS
funding
More Waimarino organisations are applying for Community Organisations Grants Scheme funding. This was evident by the large number of organisations that applied to the latest call for funding - 38 applications from the Waimarino were received. Department of Social Welfarc collator Napa Otimi said it is nearly double the number received at the last distribution of funds. COGS was created to distribute Government funding to community
groups and organisations that provide essential social services, or socially disadvantaged groups Priority groups include Maori and Pacific Islanders, child support services, unemployed, elderly, youth and disabled. Last year more than $90,000 was distributed in the Waimarino and Rangitikei districts. The decision as to how funding is distributed is made by a committee of 12 community representatives. three are representative of the Waimarino. Mr Otimi said the
increase is due to greater public awareness. "More people are becoming aware of the benefits of COGS funding," he said. The Waimarino COGS representatives are Richard Akapita, Maria Condon and Garry Clayton
