Triathlon motto: "elite is neat"

Twenty-seven two -person teams took part in the second Tongariro Classic multisport event in the Ruapehu region at the weekend. Race organiser Richard Balm, an Ohakune park ranger, was disappointed with the fairly small number of entries in the event. "We have the cream of multisport triathlons here," he said, "but not the average citizen 'having a go', which we had hoped to attract." He attributes the small numbers to the delay in
promoting the event, which didn't get underway until February, with a price increase and the fact that there are many other competitive triathlons on the market at present. "Our motto for the event," he said, is: "small is beautiful, elite is neat." Overall, the lack of competition meant the triathlon had been a fairly relaxed and happy event for most participants - an occa- • sion to meet up with old friends, or a chance to participate with experienced athletes on the triathlon circuit.
