College soccer revenge
The College soccer side found the posture and form which was clearly not there two weeks ago when they were beaten 10.1 by the Taumarunui team. Good passes and intensive pressure by the College forwards of Geoff Drayton and Jason Langdon were awaxded with a penalty after 18 minutes. The spot kick was nicely converted by John McCartney for a 1.0 lead. The midfield of Peter Samson, John Laurenson and Paul Wagstaff caused much excitement by allowing the forwards, who were skil-
fully led by Cpt Brendon Gammeter to upset the Taumarunui goal area. The opposition only really tested the college defence minutes before half time with a precise free kick which left keeper Dean Drayton stranded as John McCartney cleared off the line. Jacyn Bramley came on for Peter Samson at half time when Duane Dixon's long throw in provided Dean Drayton with an open goal to power home the College's second. Taumarunui kept fighting, but their No. 7 was soon sent off for continuous infringements.
An excellent set piece contributed to Ruapehu's final goal. John Laurenson ran from midfield and fed Brendon Gammeter a ball 15 yards outside the area. Gammeter dribbled past three defenders and beat the keeper, slotting the ball inside the far post. Consistent defence by fullbacks Justin King and John Greenwood couldn't keep a clean sheet through an unlucky back pass which left Dean Drayton no chance and Taumarunui had a deserved consolation after earlier hitting the woodwork.
