Waimarino polocrosse victory

The WanganuiWaimarino Association celebrated a much sought after victory recently. The women's polocrosse division at the New Zealand national championships held at the Kaitieke Domain on April 15 & 16 was the victory venue. The local players in the team were Kay Avery, Enid Windle and Bernice Frost from Raetihi and Patty Smith from Kakataki. The title has not been

won by the Association since 1983. The team played three hard games to gain entry into the final in which they beat Northland 21-14. Individual prizes in the championships went to Kay Avery who was selected as the best number one rider. Kay was also selected to play for New Zealand against Australia a month ago. The test series was drawn with one win each. The 1st division men's team was also successful, winning the

plate final by one goal against Rangitikei/Manawatu. Local players were Bernie and Jim Hyland, Bruce Stone and John Smith all from Kakataki. Some great polocrosse skills shown by Bernie Hyland, Jim Hyland and good combination between Bruce Stone and John Smith. The final weekend is to be held at the Kaitieke Domain and will be called The Veteran's Carnival", April 30 and May 1.
