Wanganui low
The Wanganui River is at its lowest level ever for this time of year, according to some locals. Pipiriki Ranger Station staff report the river to be below the one metre mark. "That is extraordinary for April," said conservation officer Dennis McDonnell. Mr McDonnell said this has caused some problems for local jet boaters. "We've had a couple to mishaps where boats
have been left grounded in some places," he said. He attributed the low level to the mild weather conditions experienced in the Waimarino over the past few weeks. The situation also has its advantages, according to Mr McDonnell. Staff from the Wanganui Rangitikei Catchment Board spent three days clearing snags from the rapids between Atene and Whakahore.
