Housing Corp cleans up land
Waimarino Draglines are working on Housing Corporation Land in Ohakune this month, creating five new sections and cleaning up an area of wasteiand.
The earthworks company has been given five weeks to complete the project but manager Hira Parata says the job will be done in about 12 days. Seven existing state houses in the Tay
Street/Conway Street block are affected by the project. The existing houses will loose the back part of their sections to the subdivision. A Housing Corporation spokesman said the
sections would not be subdivided until after consultation with the council. Demolition work was the first part of the project with old sheds and water tanks on the existing sections being removed. Earthworks on the project involve filling some large holes on the
wasteiand. Replacing the drainage system is also part of the project, as well as erecting 600 metres of new high wooden fences on side and rear boundaries of the existing sections. Garages will also be built for the seven existing houses. The Housing Corporation spokesman said the area had needed tidying up for a long time and that the back parts of the existing sections had not been used by the present tenants. Mr Parata said Waimarino Draglines have been lucky with the weather, that the ground has been as dry as it is likely to get. Asked why they were putting on the pace when they've been give over a month he said: "we're showing how good we are."
