Cutbacks in Government funding may result in the' loss of staff with the Department of Conservation. ~ Senior Conservation Officer at Pipiriki Dennis McDonnell expressed concern that recent reductions in funding in the Department may result in the loss of some wage workers. "It may get to the stage where we won't be able to afford to pay them," he said. Already the lack of funds has had a detrimental effect on maintenance in the area. Mr McDonnell said staff have wound down maintenance of huts and work buildings. Some clean-up programmes are on-going, to ensure tracks and buildings are up to standard before the winter season, he said.
