Ohakune District Court
The following cases were heard by Judge D. Lowe of Wanganui in the Ohakune District Court last Thursday. Police sergeant Neil Coker appeared for the prosecution and acting traffic sergeant of Taumarunui for the MoT. Wilful trespass Nevil Phillip Bain, 34, self-employed trapper of Tokoroa, pleaded not . guilty to a charge of wilful trespass on the property of William Cornelius of Mangateitei Valley on April 5. He was remanded to appear in the Ohakune District Court on May 24 for a defended hearing on the bail condition that he does not enter the complainant's property during the remand period. Community abuse Dennis Mason Peihopa Bishop, 19, carver of Ohakune, faced a total of seven charges when he appeared for sentence. The charges included three breaking and entering charges, two charges of theft, one of behaving in a disorderly manner likely to
cause violence and one charge of possession of a weapon (a large steel bar weighing about 201bs) with intent to commit a crime involving a threat of violence. All seven charges related to offences occurring between January 12 and April 3 the most recent being while defendant was on bail and under curfew for the earlier offences. In sentencing defendant to corrective training and after reading out a list of offences committed by the defendant over the past two years, Judge Lower said that no-one had the right to abuse the community as defendant had done. Counsel: P. Brown. Car conversion Phillip Henry Bowring, 28, unemployed of Raetihi, pleaded guilty to unlawfully taking a motor vehicle at National Park on March 26. Court heard how defendant had been returning from Taumarunui when he stopped at National Park and took a car from the National Park Hotel car park in order to siphon some petrol for his own vehicle so that he could drive back
to Raetihi. He was convicted and remanded to appear in the Ohakune District Court on May 12 for a community service report. Cannabis possession Jacqueline Donna Burke, 21, secretary of Papakura, pleaded not guilty to a charge of being in possession of cannabis plant on March 4. She was remanded at large to appear in the Ohakune District Court on June 9 for a defended hearing. Counsel: D.G. Harvey. Not guilty pleas Zane David Cadwallader, 25, shearer of Raetihi, faced three charges. He pleaded not guilty to a charge of possession of cannabis leaf on March 1, not guilty to a charge of breaking and entering a shed on Ruanui Station on February 18 and he was remanded without plea to appear on May 12 for a plea to be taken on a charge of breaking and entering a dwelling house in Wanganui on February 27. On the first two not guilty pleas he was remanded to appear in the Ohakune District Court on July 8 for a defended

Dangerous driving Jason John Collett, 17, g arden, hand of Karioi, pleaded guilty to a charge of driving a motor vehicle (a motorcycle) in Clyde Street, Ohakune, on March 3 in a manner which might have been dangerous to the public. Court heard how de fendant had driven his motorcyle at speeds estimated to be in excess of 80km/h while weaving in and out of traffic in Clyde Street. He was convicted and fined $120, court costs $65 and disqualified for 6 months. Counsel: D.G. Harvey. Disorderly behaviour Shane Anthony Collett, 17, labourer of Karioi, pleaded guilty to a charge of behaving in a disorderly manner likely to cause violence in the early hours ,of April 3 in Moore Street, Ohakune. He was convicted and fined $130, court costs $65. Counsel: P. .Brown. Urtlicensed driver Nathan John Donghi, 15, student of Raetihi, had three charges brought against him byi
the MoT on January 4 1988 including operating a motor vehicle without a WoF, not having a driver's licence and not having the registration plates affixed in the required manner. He was to appear in the Ohakune District Court on May 12. Receiving charge James Turuhia Edmonds, 41, farm manager of Raetihi, pleaded not guilty to a charge of receiving a bridle valued at approximately $70 belonging to Brent Matthews from a person or persons. - unknown. He was remanded to appear in the Ohakune District Court on July 8 for a defended hearing. Counsel: D.G. Harvey. Intimidation charge Phillip Hamley Ellery, 28, labourer of Ohakune, was remanded without plea on a charge of intimidation with a threat to injure on February 23. He was remanded at large to appear in the Ohakune District Court on May 12. Driving while disqualified Danny Mahuia Haddon, 30, market gardener of Wanganui, requested through counsel that the charge of driving while disqualified on SH4 on April 3 be transferred to the Wanganui District Court. The application was granted on an intimated plea of guilty. He is to
appear in Wanganui on May 3. Counsel: P. Brown. Cannabis possession William Harris, 29, carver of Raetihi pleaded not guilty to a charge of possession of cannabis on March 22. He was remanded at large to appear in the Ohakune District Court on June 9 for a defended hearing. Counsel: D.G. Harvey. Assault Emmanuel Howe, 23, unemployed of Raetihi, pleaded guilty to one charge of wilful trespass and one charge of assault on a female. Court heard how defendant had assaulted a female companion at the Ohakune Hotel on January 14. The female lost consciousness during the attack, an ambulance had to be called and she was taken first to the Waimarino Hospital and later to Wanganui Hospital. The trespass charge also related to the Ohakune Hotel from which the defendant had earlier been banned. He was convicted and sentenced to twomonths periodic detention on the wilful trespass charge and to sixmonths periodic detention on the assault charge. Counsel: D.G. Harvey. Disqualfied but driving Barry Kimura, 32, unemployed of Raetihi, pleaded guilty to driving while disqualified in Seddon Street,
Raetihi, on March 29. As this was only one of several driving while disqualified offences over the past few years he was remanded on bail to appear in the Ohakune District Court on May 12 for a probation officer's report and sentence and advised to get a lawyer. Wilful trespass charge Bruce Francis Liddle, 39, unemployed trapper of Tokoroa, pleaded not guilty to two charges of wilful trespass on the property of William Cornelius of Mangateitei Valley on April 5. He was remanded to appear in the Ohakune District Court on May 24 for a defended hearing on the bail condition that he does not enter complainant's property during the remand period. Disorderly behaviour Vernon Leslie McLeod, 19, unemployed of Karioi, appeared on one charge of possession of cannabis plant on April 7 and on one charge of behaving in a disorderly manner in Moore Street, Ohakune, during the early hours of April 3. He pleaded guilty to both charges. On the charge of possession he was convicted and fined $50, court costs $65 and on the second charge he was convicted and fined $70, court costs $50. Counsel: D.G. Ohakune District Court
From page 12 Weapon possession George Ashford Pekamu, 20, unemployed of Ohakune, pleaded guilty to one charge of behaving in a disorderly manner in Moore Street, Ohakune, in the early hours of April 3 and to one charge of possession of a weapon in a public place on March 21. Court heard how defendant had been "playing with" a knife whose 10cm blade folded into the handle while walking in Ayr Street, Ohakune. He was convicted and sentenced to three months non-residential periodic detention on each charge. Counsel: P. Brown. Tractor conversion John David Frederick Pikari, 29, unemployed market garden worker of Ohakune, pleaded guilty to a charge of converting a forklift tractor valued at $20,000 belonging to his employer for his own use. Court heard how defendant had arrived at work early and, because it was a cold morning, decided to return home to collect a jacket usmg the tractor in question. He was apprehended as he was returning from home to his place of work on the OhakuneRaetihi Road.
He was convicted and ordered to pay court costs of $65 and disqualified from driving any sort of vehicle for 12 months. Counsel: D.G. Harvey. Receiving Steven Charles Pui, 18, garden worker of Raetihi, pleaded guilty to a charge of receiving from a person or persons unknown a black jacket valued at $50 belonging to Harold Charles Mallalieu knowing it to have been stolen or dishonestly obtained. The jacket was later recovered and returned. He was convicted and ordered to come up for sentence within 12 months and was ordered to pay $100 towards the cost of prosecution. Counsel: D.G. Harvey. Warrant for arrest Barry Richards, 23, of Raetihi, was to have appeared on three charges including having no driver's licence, driving a defective vehicle and driving a motor vehicle without a WoF. Court heard how defendant was known to be in the area but had been deliberatly evading the serving of a summons. A warrant for his arrest was issued in lieu of summons. Cannabis possession Elizabeth Richards, 22, unemployed of
Raetihi, pleaded guilty to a charge of being in possession of cannabis plant on March 10. She was convicted and remanded to appear in the Ohakune District Court on May 12 for a probation officer's report and sentence. Counsel: P. Brown. Cannabis bags & cigarette William John Richards, 19, unemployed of Raetihi, pleaded guilty to possession of cannabis plant material on March 4. Court heard how police found two plastic bags containing cannabis plant material when defendant was first questioned in Seddon Street, Raetihi, and later, when he was questioned at the police station, a cigarette containing cannabis material was found in his pocket. He was convicted and fined $100, court costs $65. Counsel: P. Brown. Drunk driving Glenn Stuart Robson, 22, mill hand of Ruatiti, pleaded guilty to one charge of driving while disqualified in Seddon Street, Raetihi, on March 4 and to one charge of driving with excess breath alcohol on the same occasion. Court heard how defendant had come to the Waimarino to avoid the "slippery slope" of life in Auckland where he
had previously faced similar convictions and had now found regular and reliabla work with an employer in Ruatiti Valley who appeared in Court on defendant's behalf. Because these were not his first offences involving similar charges he was convicted and fined $600, court costs $65 on the excess breath alcohol and $900, court costs $65 on the driving while disqualified charge. He was also disqualified from driving for a minimum of 18 months after which he must apply to the Secretary of Transport for his driving licence to be restored. Counsel: D.G. Harvey. Careless driving Rebecca Taiaroa, sickness beneficiary of Raetihi, pleaded guilty to one charge of driving a motor vehicle without ever having had a driving licence and one charge of driving without reasonable consideration for other road users. Court heard how defendant had driven out of a property on the Raetihi-Ohakune Road on February 6 and in doing so caused another motor vehicle to brake sharply and take evasive action in order to avoid a collision. She was convicted and fined $60, court costs $65 on each charge, disqualified for three
months and advised to take a driving test and obtain a driving licence at the expiry of her period of disqualification. Cannabis possession Tui Louise Tamatea, 21, factory supervisor of Ohakune, pleaded guilty to possession of cannabis leaf on March 4. She was convicted and fined $75, court costs $65. Counsel: D.G. Harvey. Cannabis cigarettes David Warren Wiari, 27, unemployed of Raetihi, pleaded guilty to a charge of possession two cigarettes containing cannabis plant material in Seddon Street, Raetihi, on March 4. He was convicted and fined $100, court costs $65. However he was remanded to appear in the Ohakune District Court on May 12 to answer two warrants from the Invercargill Court involving outstanding debts and a traffic offence. Counsel: D.G. Harvey. Electricity theft A 26-year-old solo mother of Raetihi, who was granted interim suppression of name, was charged with stealing electricity to the value of $2,271.06 from the WanganuiRangitikei Electric Power Board between September 16 1985 and
19 February 1988. She pleaded guilty and was remanded on bail to appear in the Ohakune District Court on June 9 for a defended hearing. Counsel: J. Rota of Wanganui. Assault with a weapon A 28-year-old female from Raetihi who was granted an interim suppression of name, faced a charge of of assault using a weapon (a knife) in whai was described as a "domestic incident" on 10 October last year. She was remanded to appear in the Ohakune District Court on May 12 and was given bail providing there was no contact with the complainant during the remand period. Counsel: D.G. Harvey. Assault with intent , A 29-year-old male from Raetihi pleaded guilty to three charges of assault including assault with intent to injure, assault on a female and assault using a weapon (a knife). All these charges arose from what was described as a "domestic incident" on March 4. He was convicted and remanded on bail to appear in the Ohakune District Court on May 12 on each charge providing there was no contact with the complainant during the remand period. Counsel: P. Brown.
Receiving charge Duncan Vincent Metekingi, 34, unemployed shearer of Raetihi and Hilary Pirihita Metekingi, 31, housewife of Raetihi, jointly pleaded not guilty to a charge of receiving a saddle valued at $700 from a person or persons unknown. They were remanded on bail to appear in the Ohakune District Court on June 9 for a defended hearing. Counsel: J. Rota of Wanganui. Cannabis possession charge Robin Arthur Manley, 22, mill manager of Horopito, pleaded not guilty to a charge of possession of cannabis plant on March 4. He was remanded on bail to appear in the Ohakune District Court on June 9. Counsel: D.G. Harvey. Assaulting police Thomas John Tui Martin, 31, unemployed of Pipiriki, was convicted and remanded to appear for a probation officer's report and sentence in the Ohakune District Court on May 12 on one charge of disorderly behaviour and one charge of assaulting police.
