FIRST TREKKERS
Trekkers unite! The call has gone up in the Waimarino for interested persons to band together and form the areas first Trekking Group. Raetihi resident Margaret Haitana formulated the idea after reading an article in a recent edition of NZ Women's Weekly and is keen to form a group from other enthusiasts in the area. Mrs Haitana said she is keen on walking distances but not on tramping. t"Climbing the mountain doesn't interest me," she said, "but I don't mind going on a three day walk with a group of people and sleeping out overnight." Mrs Haitana is looking for a few initial members to form the group, "We need a small enthusiastic bunch who can enthuse others," she said. The only stipulation she places on members is that they have a reasonable level of fitness. "I've talked to a lot of people, a number of whom have said they are interested in one day and half day walks, and that's fine too."
