A day to remember...
...the end of borough
This Saturday March 26, Raetihi's main street turns into a medieval village green. Medieval Day is to mark the end o f Raetihi's borough status, which it has enjoyed for 75 years.
The day has been organised by Raetihi Hotel proprietors Iris and Ray Parr. Iris is the granddaughter o f Augustus Dauphin who was a Raetihi Borough councillor elected in 1913. Banquet food will be
available from a marquee at the Raetihi Hotel from Ilam till 7pm or until the food runs out. The feast will include two legs of beef and two pigs and two hoggets roasted on a spit. Adult festers' fee for
the feed will be $12 and children under 12, $5. Profits from the feast go to 'Chills Off' Raetihi Pool cover project. Raetihi personalities have been bribed to let themselves be locked into stocks as targets for cream and marshmallow pies, The local constabulary will take charge of that event.
Other events include horse shoe throwing and knights jousting on donkey back. There will be three girl's marching teams in town plus an army platoon and tanks. At the Cosmopolitan Club a wine and cheese evening is to be held for past and present borough councillors and staff.
A disco with prizes for best fancy dress will be going at the Raetihi Hotel 'till 1am. For Ohakune well wishers there will be buses laid on between the towns at Ilam, 2pm and 4pm. A medieval poster competition is on for children as well as an essay competition for school pupils with a $100 prize.
