Delay for water funds
Funds for the proposed ultraviolet water treatment system for Ohakune may not be available until 1989 or e v e n 1990. At last week's final
Ohakune Borough Council meeting council discussions of the proposal was prompted by a letter from the Health Department stating that the subsidy of $282,421 had been approved in principle. The letter advised
council to apply for ministerial approval as soon as possible. It said that council may have gained the impression that this application would not be considered until finance was available but that this was not the
case. "Your application will be considered and processed upon receipt," said the letter. Later: "On present indications it is unlikely that finance will b e available prior to the 1989/90 year, although
this situation could change." f Councillor Ben Goddard said after the meeting that he interpreted this to mean the Ohakune scheme would go onto a priority list for funds. During the meeting Cr Goddard told council the Department of Conservation were happy for the Waimarino District Council to lay water pipes above ground from the source within the Park. He said that contrary to this, council had on record that DoC would not be willing for this to happen. Cr Goddard also brought to council's attention a newspaper article about an ultra-vio-let system that had been used in Gisborne as an emergency water treatment system.
